Djinn (Genies) are a part of Islamic mythology. Islam dictates that there are three different types of beings, the angels which are made out of lift, the Djinn which are made out of fire, and humans which are made out of clay. Angels are gender less, and on’t have free will. Humans and Djinn both have free will as well as genders. Djinn are generally tricky or malevolent creatures although they do have the capacity for good they don’t often show it.
Marid
The Marid are the strongest tribe of the Djinn, said to have large strong bodies, and a powerful presence. Marid is Arabic for rebellious. Like it’s name the Marid is rebellious and hard to control. The Marid have a vast knowledge of magic, and have assisted many kings, and priests throughout history. They are blue in colour and well known for this. Genie from Aladdin was a Marid, although he didn’t have their most common characteristics, the Marid is the one most commonly used in film, and books. Among Djinn different colours signify different characteristics. The colour blue represents intelligence and superior age. They commonly live in the ocean and are known as spirits of the sea.
Ifrit
Strong and cunning, are words often associated with this class of Jinn. Found in caves, and underground they like to live in large human societies. Iftit have been known to work with humans and help them fulfill tasks. In the Quran it says that king soloman had power over a whole tribe of Ifrit which he convinced to do his bidding. Ifrit are conniving schemers at heart and enjoy scamming humans for amusement. If you’ve ever been the victim of a scam online, or offline, chances are that it was a Ifrit at fault. The Ifrit have shown their intelligence by becoming very tech savvy, in a world becoming more and more dependant, these Djinn have recognised it’s importance. Ifrit are giant, winged creatures made of fire. Although they enjoy human society they also have their own. Their society is made up of tribes, clans, and even kings. Ifrit mostly marry with their own kind but have been known to marry humans. Wicked and ruthless, they often get on the bad side of humans, which leaves some with a bitter taste n their mouths. Human weapons don’t have much of an effect on them but it’s claimed they can be killed with magic which is possible for humans to learn.
Iblis/Devil
This Djinn is known to have an extremely foolish pride, and confidence. Devils primary goal is to make humans commit as many sins as possible. They attempt to this through trickery and lies, which is describe in the Quran as “Whispering into the hearts.” Devils can be controlled by atheists. Unlike humans devils are creatures of pure logic, they do not make emotional decisions, and never commit sin. When God created Adam he commanded all the angels and devils to worship Adam. The angels agree and began to prostate, but the devils refused. God was furious at their hubris and arrogance. God threw the devil out of heaven but agreed not to punish him until the final judgement.
It is We Who created you and gave you shape; then We bade the angels prostrate to Adam, and they prostrate; not so Iblis; He refused to be of those who prostrate.
(Allah) said: “What prevented thee from prostrating when I commanded thee?” He said: “I am better than he: Thou didst create me from fire, and him from clay.”
— Quran, sura 7 (Al-A’raf) ayat 11-12
The Devil was convinced he was superior to Adam. He was a Djinn made out of fire, where as Adam was only made out of clay. He vowed that he would lead all humans into hell to prove their inferiority and that he wasn’t inferior to humans.
Ghoul
Ghoul live in the North and west of the world, where they are often known as the undead or zombies. Ghouls sleep during the day, and haunt graveyards during the night. They look for humans and eat their flesh. They aren’t very smart or particularly strong among Djinn, but they are more than enough to pose a serious threat to unprepared humans. Ghouls were created by the devil. Ghouls wander the desert and change their shape to suit environment better. They commonly take the form of Hyena. It will trick humans into going into certain areas where they can’t escape and eat their flesh. They commonly eat children and babies, drink human blood, steal coins, and eat dead bodies. Ghouls are completely evil and cannot commit any kind of good deeds. They stay away from human societies meaning people are mainly safe from them. They don’t have he intelligence to use computers so there is no chance of them causing trouble online.
Vetala
A type of Djinn known to occupy Cadavers, or corpses. While a Vetala is possessing a human body it will not decay. Because of this they will actually appear to be humans themselves and you may not be able to tell the difference. Vetala are powerful creatures, whose strength lies in their variety of skills. Like the ghoul Djinn Vetala have the ability to shape shift at will. Unlike the Ghoul Djinn, Vetala also have psychic powers. Vetala use the power of Clairvoyance to see into the future giving them a powerful advantage over most creatures. They also read minds. These creatures originate from Hindu, and ancient Indian folklore. They are only partially evil and have the capacity of good. The chances of encountering a Vetala Djinn are very slim, and if you do encounter one chances are you won’t even know it.
