From a supervolcano in America with a 10% chance of erupting very soon and killing millions of Americans, to a volcano responsible for the biggest eruption in history and might break that record. This is a list of 7 active supervolcano that could erupt soon. Volcanoes have enormous destructive power, some scientists claim that if a large amount were to go off in a chain reaction it would cause so much damage that no country would have enough money to deal with the repercussions.
Yellowstone
Yellowstone may be the biggest danger to the whole of America right now. Geologists warn that there is possibly a 10 percent chance of Yellowstone erupting and devastating the country. The blast would kill millions of people and cause extreme damage that couldn’t be repaired for years. Scientists unfortunately found a magma chamber that was four times the larger than the one thought to be the biggest, and full of enough molten rock to fill America’s famous grand canyon 11 times.

This Caldera was forms by a huge eruption 22,000 years ago, inside it lies the Sakurajima volcano. This active volcano is constantly releasing volcanic ash onto the surrounding area, and is even on a level three alert which means the volcano is too dangerous to approach. This enormous caldera was formed in 1914 by the biggest eruption seen in twentieth century Japan. Luckily residents of the Island had managed to escape due to the earthquakes that warned them before hand. The eruption was incredibly violent and the lava flowed for days.
Lake Toba
Lake Toba is inside the caldera of a supervolcano which caused the largest eruption in the last 25 million years. At the time it caused climate change and was responsible for a population bottleneck. Because of the huge loss of human life t has actually affected the genetics of the human race today, we would all be completely different people if this eruption didn’t happen. It caused a volcanic winter so huge it caused the entire temperature of the planet to decrease. The explosion left 2800km of material, including ignimbrite and ash. An area comprising of atleast 20,000km was destroyed by a fast moving current of gas and rock called a pyroclastic flow.
Lake Taupo Supervolcano
Taupo is the most frequently active volcano in the world. Taupo was the cause of two coloassal eruptions, to of the largest volcanic eruptions in history. That being the Oruanui eruption, and the Hatepe eruption. Out of the hundreds of eruptions caused by this volcano these two have caused the most damage to geographical and human existence. The Oruanui eruption was so large that it covered the land in a material called ignimbrite which was up to 600ft deep, and was the largest eruption for the last 70,000 years.
Paektu Mountain Supervolcano
Mount Paektu, Baekdu, or Changbai is an active volcano on the border between North, and South Korea. The border between these two countries s already dangerous enough without the chance of such a huge eruption. It is the highest Mountain in the Korean peninsula and North East China, its 2744 m. Atop the mountain is a crater Lake called Heaven Lake where Kim Jong Il is said to have been born. The crater lake was created by an enormous eruption that happened in winter 946 AD. The ash from the explosion managed to make it all the way to Japan.
Mount Rinjani
Rinjani is one the highest montains in the world it measure up to 3,726 m high. At the peak of the Volcano is a crater lake Segara Anak, which means child of the sea because it’s the same colour blue as the sea. The lake is inside the Caldera which also contains hot springs, which are rather like natural jacuzzis. The Volcano has erupted three times in May 22, 2010. It used to be part of a Mountain named Mount Samalas which was 4,200 m high and caused one the biggest eruptions in known history.
Mount Tambora Supervolcano
Mount Tambora is 4,300m high and responsible for the largest eruption in recorded history. The massive eruption woke people up more than 1,200m away. It caused the death of over 71,000 people, however only a seventh of those people were killed by the eruption the rest died in the fallout after it. This incident is known as the “year without a summer” and was one of the worst famines in history. The first man to climb the mountain after the eruption was Heinrich Zollinger a Swiss botanist who climbed it in 1857. As he climbed up he began to slowly sink into a warm powder like substance.
